Abstract: In Tunisia, as all over the world, intentional traumas resulting from assaults represent a growing social scourge especially after the revolution of January 2011. Facial trauma occupies a special place due to its psychological impact on victims. This study aims to examine the demographics, pattern and management of maxillofacial injuries due to interpersonal violence. It’s about a retrospective study, interesting all cases of isolated intentional maxillofacial traumas collected in the Forensic Department of the University Hospital Habib Bourguiba of Sfax - Tunisia during six months between July and December 2017. We collected 270 cases of isolated facial trauma with a prevalence of 7.3%. Victims were mainly young men with low socio-economic class. Bruise was the most frequent lesion (67.4%). Orbital region was the most common site of lesions (52.2%). Total temporary disability (TTD) average was 10.81 days. Permanent partial disability (PPD) was predicted in 34.8% of cases. Despite the low prevalence of isolated facial trauma, it is considered as a major public health problem. Consequences of the complaint lodged by the victim depend on conclusions of medicolegal expertise.

Abstract: Purpose: To provide information for the further application of the quantitative research in oral and maxillofacial medicine. Methods: Reviewed the literatures related to the applications of quantitative stereology in the subdisciplines of the oral and maxillofacial medicine and other medical specialty both in China and in other countries since 1970s. Results: Stereological method as a kind of unbiased mathematical method, can accurately calculate the volume of a specific object, region, length, surface area, etc. As an interdisciplinary science, stereology is closely linked with very more other disciplines. While compared with other medical specialty, there are much deficiencies, such as narrow range of application, less stereological parameter relative, to be improved in the applications of quantitative stereological technique in oral and maxillofacial medicine. Conclusion: Currently stereological theory and method have not yet been well applied in oral and maxillofacial medical research. In the future research, it should expand quantitative stereological method in the application of oral and maxillofacial medical, and exert the advantages of stereology and further explore new stereological parameters, pay attention to the joint application of a variety of parameters.

Abstract: Oral and maxillofacial surgery is that specialty of dentistry including the diagnosis as well as surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects, including both the functional and esthetic aspects of hard and soft tissues of oral and maxillofacial region. Local anesthesia (LA) also has role in maxillofacial surgeries, some oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures can, however, be performed, with or without conscious sedation depending on the extent of the lesion and the ease of surgical access. We aim in this article to high lighting role of local anesthesia for surgical management of major maxillofacial operations already planned to be operated under general anaesthesia. Sample presentation of major maxillofacial cases that can be underwent under local anesthesia also patients evaluation regarding pain and wound healing. Case series of 36 patients (5-78) years old, from (2004-2013) attained Maxillofacial department at Al-Salam (Mosul) and Al-Kadhimiya (Baghdad) Teaching Hospital. All patients underwent major surgeries under local anesthesia (5-7 cartridges). Patients evaluated regarding pain, wound healing and recovery period. Five patients had moderate intraoperative pain that forced us to increase the dose of local anesthesia, minimal blood ooze one hour postoperatively; healing process was uncomplicated. In accordance to time need for each surgery half of cases need no more than 30 minutes to complete the surgery. More than half of patients (27.77% -33.33%) recommend 4-5 cartridge of local anesthesia uses to complete the surgeries. Oral and Maxillofacial operations which can be managed under local anesthesia are practicable and were tolerated and accepted by the adult patients. Local anesthesia can be used to facilitate safer and more efficient procedures especially in medically compromised patients. Local anesthesia surgeries alleviate risk factors and laryngeal discomfort associated with surgeries under general anesthesia, no starvation and minimal hospital stay.
